Gay marriage made legal in New York
Gay marriage has been legalised in New York state, after a long and acrimonious passage. The new law will allow gay marriage cermonies to take place in the city from the end of July 2011. The move is part of a wider battle for civil rights in America, that has so far led to same-sex marriage laws being passed in six other states.
